ANTICA: MEAT RESTAURANT IN THE CITY OF COMO

  Having researched Tripadvisor and other online sites for a good gluten free meal option, we picked this restaurant and we were not disappointed.

20 min walk from the... read more marina / Lake Como, it was well worth leaving the ancient city walls behind. A very quiet area, away from the hive of tourism and fast in / out mass produced eating options in the main tourist centre, the restaurant sits modestly on one of the city suburb streets. Yes the Michelin plaques sit proudly on the doorway along with gluten free accreditations.

However as soon as you enter the restaurant the buzz from the local customers chatting excitedly amongst each other, the warm welcome from staff and the overall ambiance takes over. The first thing you then notice is the large open fire cooking grill area, accompanied by the aroma of wood burning and food cooking.

We were shown to our table upstairs in a bright yet homely area. Menus are multilingual and the staff recognising I had a Gluten Free requirement from my booking, proceeded to apologise for poor English (which wasn’t the case) and take me through the various options and avoidances o the menu.

We were then given time to take in the ambience, and appreciate what was on offer in the menu. And we were not disappointed.

We decided to order creamed cod in polenta cases with sweet pointed tomatoes as a shared starter, and then for main courses I opted for fillet steak from the fire grill and my wife went for ravioli with scampi - the scampi were raw on menu but they agreed to cook these for my wife which was well received. A portion of roasted potato wedges with rosemary and roasted veg medley completed the choices. Served with local red wine (great to be able to order a half bottle), water and I went for a G&T as I cannot have fermented drinks / wine due to GF concerns.

By this stage the upstairs eating area was starting to fill up with various languages and age brackets in evidence.

Bread arrived with olive oil selection along with a freshly baked and warm gluten free bread mini loaf for myself.

Starter served and wow! Such a sight a plate. Presentation 100% and a generous portion on offer. Proof however is in the eating and this was so tasty. Sun courses arrived and coined to perfection. Steak served with a choice of flavoured house salts which added to the flavour.

We were given plenty of time to enjoy this excellent food and not subjected to the “we need table mentality” of the more touristy restaurant choices in the town centre.

We opted for desserts all made in house and a cheesecake and a tiramisu duly arrived, finned off with coffee.

Overall an excellent relaxing and superb dining experience, not rushed, with delightful staff supporting this.

The staff were incredibly informative about the meats on offer on the menu, giving details of the regions they were from and the quality. We first tried this place with our daughter and her best friend (in their 20s) and then returned immediately the following week with our other daughter and my parents. I'm rarely fully satisfied with either food or service but tonight was an exception.
The restaurant has a comfortable but stylish ambience with touches like premium olive oils, bursting with clean, aromatic flavours and a selection of interesting salts to accompany - which I tried with my delicious lamb as intended -and with the bread, and the salad and the grilled vegetables!
I particularly liked the black Haiwaian salt.
We don't usually do dessert due to our coeliac daughter and the limitations of that, but this restaurant catered very well for coeliac diets -she was able to taste both tiramisu and another exquisite concoction of nuts and cream-can't remember the name. I should also mention that whilst there's only 2-3 specific vegetarian options, a number of the dishes can and were adapted for our vegetarian diners. Excellent.

My wife had (gluten-free) tagliatelle with a wild boar sauce, and I "paccheri" stuffed with sausage meat and black truffle shavings. Next came a fillet of Irish bred Angus. Cooked to perfection with a side order of roast potatoes that would have given Obelix pause. To round off our lunch, a pudding of zabaglione and whipped cream with chocolate flakes. Truly excellent after a series of mainly indifferent Moroccan restaurants in France.
It's not cheap, but it is very good value!

SERVICE: 4/5. The waiter who served us was professional and friendly at the same time, which I appreciated. One dish was changed slightly because one ingredient wasn't gluten free, but I was informed only when it was about to be served. I would have preferred knowing the dish was going to be different beforehand so that I could order something else.
MENU: 4/5. As soon as I told the waiter I have celiac disease, he replied that every dish could be served gluten free. The menu is not as large as other restaurants.
FOOD: 4,5. I ordered prawn tails with apple and beer cream. This is the dish that was changed without asking/informing me. Instead of the cream, the chef put chopped turnip greens, which were good but I could tell the cream would have been the perfect combination. I got the risotto creamed with crescenza cheese and sprinkled with blueberry reduction; it would've been perfect if the cheese didn't complete mask the taste of the blueberries. Lastly, I got a chocolate lava cake, which was AMAZING!
PRICE: 2/5. The service fee is very high, basically double compared to other restaurants. The quality was good but I was expecting to pay around 50 euros, not 70.

We had a reservation for 7.30pm (opening time) and they literally don’t open the door before that so we had to wait outside.

The restaurant staff were very professional and attentive, and they serve a wide range of olive oils ( including some flavoured ones), plus a huge range of salts ( such as Camargue from Provence).

A good experience all round.
